In an era where industries evolve at breakneck speed, the ability to bridge disciplines has become a cornerstone of professional success. Gone are the days when expertise in one area was sufficient. Today, the leaders who make the most impact are those who combine knowledge across multiple domains—creating value by connecting the dots others may overlook.

Bridging Academia, Business, and Sports

My journey as a Project Leader and Lecturer at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and FH Graubünden (FHGR) has been shaped by the intersection of academia, business, and sports. This unique blend has provided me with a diverse toolkit to address complex problems, nurture talent, and inspire growth.

For instance, in academia, the challenge often lies in translating theoretical knowledge into practical applications. By integrating business acumen, I’ve been able to guide students and professionals alike in connecting their learning to real-world contexts. Meanwhile, my experience in sports management has honed my ability to lead teams under pressure, a skill that seamlessly translates to corporate environments.

The Role of Emotional Intelligence

While technical expertise is crucial, emotional intelligence (EQ) is what sets exceptional professionals apart. EQ—encompassing self-awareness, empathy, and interpersonal skills—allows individuals to navigate complex relationships, motivate teams, and foster collaboration. In my roles as a lecturer, competitive trainer, and project leader, I’ve witnessed firsthand how EQ enhances communication and builds trust.

For example, during my doctoral research on digital activation in sports sponsorship, understanding the emotional drivers of fan engagement was just as critical as analyzing the data. This balance between hard and soft skills has consistently been the key to impactful solutions.

Practical Strategies for Multidisciplinary Growth
  1. Cultivate Curiosity: Constantly seek to learn beyond your primary field. Attend workshops, enroll in online courses, or engage with professionals in other industries.
  2. Connect Theory to Practice: Whether you’re in academia or business, always ask, “How can this concept be applied in real-life scenarios?”
  3. Invest in Emotional Intelligence: Take the time to understand your own strengths and weaknesses. Practice active listening and empathy to better connect with colleagues and clients.
  4. Build Strategic Networks: Surround yourself with professionals from diverse backgrounds. Collaboration often leads to innovation.
Final Thoughts

The future belongs to those who can adapt, learn, and innovate across boundaries. By embracing a multidisciplinary approach, we not only enhance our personal growth but also create meaningful impacts in our organizations and communities. My journey has taught me that the most valuable insights often emerge at the crossroads of disciplines—and I invite you to explore these intersections in your own career.
